TIn Wednesday’s newsletter, we explored how leaders are actively shaping rules for AI. Those efforts matter. They create important guardrails. At the same time, your child is already using AI for school, for exploration, and for everyday decisions.

Policy sets the boundaries. Your family shapes what happens within them.

This week’s MindSpark is designed to help you step into that role with clarity and intention, moving from reacting in the moment to leading with a plan.

How It Works

Start Here (1 minute)

Look closely at the MindSpark image in this email.

You see a parent, a child, and a computer with homework.

In the background, there is a government building.

This shows that while leaders are talking about AI, it is also showing up right here at your kitchen table.

Step 1: What’s Happening? (2 minutes)

Ask your child these questions:

💠 “What do you think is happening in this picture?”
💠 “What is the student trying to do?”
💠 “What role is the parent playing?”
💠 “Why do you think there is a government building in the background?”

Listen to how they connect the dots.

Step 2: What Could Go Right? (2 minutes)

Ask:

“What could go right here?” and “How could this moment actually help someone learn?”

Listen for ideas like getting unstuck, learning faster, or understanding something new.

Reinforce that AI can support learning when you use it with a goal.

Step 3: What Could Go Wrong? (2 minutes)

Now change the focus: “What could go wrong in this same moment?”

You might hear about letting AI do the thinking, getting an answer without understanding it, or trusting a wrong answer.

Then ask: “Why do you think the government is paying attention to this?”

Step 4: The Real Question (3 minutes)

Bring it home by asking: “If AI is involved, what would we want to know before using it?”

Guide them toward thinking about these questions:

💠 Is this helping me think or replacing my thinking?
💠 Do I understand the answer or just have it?
💠 Would I be able to explain this on my own?
💠 Is this allowed for this assignment or class?

Remember that even when others make big rules, you still make the choices in the moment.

Step 5: Two Family Agreements (1 minute)

Ask: “What is one rule we want to follow about AI and schoolwork?” and “What is one rule we want to follow about AI and exploring outside of school?”

Guide them to make sure schoolwork aligns with teacher rules and exploration is about creativity and skills. Write them both down:

💠 School Rule: ______
💠 Explore Rule: ______

Keep these visible this week!

Why It Works

💠 Sparks Rich Discussion: This is where the magic is. It helps you hear how your child interprets the world. You are listening for how they connect the dots between big laws and their daily life.
💠 Champions Human Experience: This activity shows that while computers are smart, they do not replace human wisdom. AI predicts what an answer should be, but your family knows what true learning feels like.
💠 Builds Identity: By talking about what is allowed or paused, you are reinforcing your family values. You are deciding together what kind of learners you want to be.
💠 Fosters Connection: It is a low pressure way to talk and reflect. It turns a hard topic into a shared project where everyone has a voice.

Parent Note

AI is now part of national talks and school decisions. You can see that in the image. At the same time, no policy replaces what happens in your home.

Most AI habits are not formed in big moments. They are formed in small, everyday decisions like this one. That is where your guidance matters most. You are not expected to have all the answers. You are expected to lead the conversation.

Parent Tip

Focus on the "why" behind your child's answers. If they say AI helps them finish fast, ask them why that matters or what they would do with the extra time.

The goal is to lead the talk. This week, try not to ask "Did you finish your homework?" Instead, ask "How did you do it?" In the Age of AI, that is the question that actually matters.
