This week’s newsletter told the story of two powerful AI companies that faced the same question at the exact same moment: Is it okay to do something just because it is allowed?
That is not just a question for billion-dollar companies. It is the same question your kids face every single day when they open a laptop, pick up a phone, or sit down to do homework.
This MindSpark activity brings that question right to your dinner table. Just because a tool lets you do something doesn’t mean it’s the wise choice. That’s not a tech lesson. That’s a life lesson.
How It Works: The Four Zones Game
This game has one question at its heart: Is this choice inside the rules, inside your family values, both, or neither?
Step 1: Make Your Four Zones
Grab four pieces of paper, four paper plates, four placemats, or just four spots on the floor with a pillow or shoe marking each one.
Write one label on each:
💠 BOTH — follows the rules AND feels right for our family
💠 RULES ONLY — technically allowed, but doesn’t sit right with us
💠 ROOTS ONLY — feels right, but might break a rule
💠 NEITHER — breaks the rules AND feels wrong
Spread them out on the floor in a square. Everyone starts in the middle.
Step 2: Read a Story Out Loud
Read these scenarios dramatically:
💠 The Shortcut: You don’t understand homework, so you ask AI to write the whole answer. You turn it in and the teacher never finds out.
💠 The Fake Video: You use AI to make a funny video of a friend saying something embarrassing. Everyone laughs, but the friend doesn’t know.
💠 The Learner: You use AI to explain a math problem you are stuck on, then solve the next one on your own.
Step 3: Everyone Moves
After each story, everyone walks to the zone they think fits best. You can stand with one foot in RULES ONLY and one foot in BOTH if you are not sure. That’s not cheating. That’s honest.
Look around the room. If your family lands in different zones, that is where the real conversation starts.
Step 4: Talk It Out
Ask these questions after each story:
💠 Which zone did you pick, and why?
💠 Did anyone land somewhere different? What did they see that you didn’t?
💠 If it’s in RULES ONLY, what would need to change to move it to BOTH?
💠 Does this choice help you grow, or does it just make things easier?
Here’s the real-world version:
This week, one AI company held its values and lost a government contract. Another company found a way to keep its values and keep its seat at the table. Both were playing the same Four Zones game your family just played.
Why It Works
💠 Judgment: Kids learn that rules are a floor, not a ceiling. Values take you higher.
💠 Nuanced Thinking: Four zones forces more depth than a simple "yes" or "no."
💠 Family Connection: When people land in different zones, you learn what each person actually values.
💠 Character Building: AI should help kids grow. These zones make that growth visible.
Parent Tip
The most powerful moment is when your child lands in RULES ONLY and knows it. They are telling you they understand the difference between what is permitted and what is right. Instead of a lecture, just ask: “Does using AI this way make you a better learner, or just a faster one?” Let them answer.
Family Extra
After you play, come back to this week’s newsletter and leave a comment: “What’s one thing you wish someone had told you about AI before your kids started using it?” We read every response!
