This week, we are discovering how to use Google’s AI Mode in the search bar to make everyday family decisions easier.
In our Wednesday newsletter, “Every Parent Could Use an Extra 15 Minutes a Day. The Next Wave of AI May Help You Get It Back”, we explored how AI is not just for technical tasks. It is incredibly useful for the small, everyday decisions that quietly take up your time and energy.
This activity is about learning how to use AI Mode as a thinking partner, right inside Google Search.
How It Works
Step 1: Turn On AI Mode in Google Search
Open Google and look for “AI Mode” in the search bar (or the AI response experience if it appears automatically).
This is what you will use for the activity.
Step 2: Ask AI a Real Family Question
Pick one real-life question your family has right now and type it directly into Google using AI Mode.
Try one of these:
💠 Weekend Prompt
“Suggest three simple activities our family could do this weekend that take less than one hour and require almost no preparation.”
💠 Gift Prompt
“My child is going to a friend’s birthday party. The friend likes [insert interests]. Suggest three thoughtful gift ideas under $50.”
💠 Family Planning Prompt
“Here are the activities our family has this week: [list them]. What is one thing we might be forgetting that would make the week run more smoothly?”
Ask the question together and read the results.
Step 3: Evaluate the Suggestions Together
Discuss what Google’s AI suggests:
💠 Which idea is the most interesting?
💠 Which idea would we skip?
💠 Did AI suggest something we never would have thought of?
💠 What would we change about the suggestion?
This helps children see that AI is a starting point, not the answer.
Step 4: Improve the Question
Now refine your search in AI Mode:
💠 “Give me one idea that costs nothing.”
💠 “Give me an option that involves being outdoors.”
💠 “Suggest something that requires no driving.”
Notice how better questions lead to better results.
Why It Works
💠 Builds Real AI Skills
Children learn how to use tools they will encounter every day.
💠 Strengthens Thinking
They learn to question, refine, and improve ideas.
💠 Creates Family Connection
It turns a simple Google search into a shared conversation.
Parent Tip
Stay focused on the “why.”
The most valuable part is not the AI answer. It is hearing your child explain their thinking.
Conversation Starter
Ask your child:
“Did Google’s AI help us think of something new, or did it mostly confirm what we already had in mind?”
The Bigger Lesson
AI is now built into tools your family already uses every day.
The advantage will not come from access.
It will come from knowing how to use it well.
That starts with asking better questions.
