AI can teach us how to build almost anything.

That does not mean we understand it.

Building upon Wednesday’s newsletter "Your Child Can Now Build Almost Anything. That Does Not Mean They Understand It," this MindSpark activity helps you see where your family’s knowledge ends and where the AI begins.

We are looking for depth. AI is a great tool, yet tools work best when there is something solid underneath.

This Weekend’s Family Activity: “Showing Real Understanding”

This activity takes 10 to 15 minutes and works for any age.

How It Works

Step 1: Explain What You Truly Know

Choose one family member to explain a topic they know well.

Give them 30 seconds.
No notes.
No devices.
No AI.

Just their own thinking.

After they finish, ask AI to explain the same topic.

Read the AI response out loud.

Now compare:

💠 What did the family member include that AI did not?
💠 What did AI include that the family member forgot?
💠 Can you tell if anything is slightly off?

Then ask AI a follow-up question that only someone with experience would think to ask.

💠 Does the answer improve?
💠 Does it stay shallow?
💠 Can you guide it?

Step 2: Explain What You Do Not Know

Now reverse it.

Choose a topic one family member does not know well, while someone else in the family understands it deeply.

Again, 30 seconds.
No notes.
No devices.

Then ask AI to explain that same topic.

Read it out loud.

Now notice:

💠 Did the AI explanation sound more convincing than the speaker’s first attempt?
💠 Did it make the speaker feel knowledgeable?
💠 Could the family expert quickly spot what was incomplete or slightly wrong?

This is where the learning becomes clear.

What You Just Discovered

When you know a subject well, you can guide AI.

When you do not, AI can create the illusion of mastery.

That difference is everything.

In the Age of AI, answers are easy.

Depth is rare.

Children who can explain ideas clearly, ask better follow-up questions, and recognize when something is off will stand out in school, in college admissions, and in the future workforce.

This activity quietly builds:

💠 Critical Thinking
💠 Technological Fluency
💠 Confidence rooted in real knowledge
💠 Initiative to question, not just accept

It also builds something even more important.

Honest conversation.

Not about catching children using AI.

About helping them understand when they truly understand.

Create More. Consume Less.

AI is powerful.

Your child’s thinking is more powerful.

This weekend, do not test the tool.

Test understanding.

And then talk about what you learned together.

That is how clarity turns into confidence.

And confidence strengthens connection.

With you,

Amy

Parent Tip

Focus on your child’s awareness of the teacher’s perspective.

When students realize teachers are also navigating this "new normal," they are more likely to be proactive in showing their work.

Ask: "What would make you trust a student if you were in charge?"

Share this email with a fellow parent and let them know about your family’s experience with MindSpark activities, learning disguised as fun, meaningful family conversations
