✨ This Week’s MindSpark: Same Values, Different Settings 🧭 ✨

Following Wednesday’s insight, "From Rules to Values: How Schools and Families Guide AI Together," it’s time to put that theory into practice.

The goal of this week’s activity is to help families connect what matters at home with what happens at school. When we do this, children experience consistency rather than mixed messages, turning the family–student–teacher relationship into a powerful trifecta.

How It Works (10–15 minutes)

Start by telling everyone: “This isn’t about rules or what’s allowed. It’s about understanding what matters most when learning is involved.”

Step 1: Name the Learning Values (Home Lens)

Read the list below as a family. Each person chooses 2 values they think matter most when learning at home:

💠 Understanding the material

💠 Being able to explain your thinking

💠 Doing your own work

💠 Using tools responsibly

💠 Learning from mistakes

💠 Curiosity and creativity

💠 Putting in real effort

💠 Ask each person: “Why did you choose those?” (No debate, just listen!)

Step 2: Shift to the School Lens

Now ask: “Which of these values do you think your teachers care most about at school?”

Each person chooses 2 values again, imagining the classroom perspective.

💠 Ask: “What makes you think that?”

This often reveals assumptions or areas where students feel uncertain.

Step 3: Spot the Overlap

Circle the values that appear in both lists.

Say: “These are the values that travel between home and school.”

This helps children see that expectations are not arbitrary, even when the specific rules differ.

Step 4: Reflect Together

Choose one question to close the activity:

💠 Where do home and school seem most aligned?

💠 Where does it feel unclear?

💠 What questions could we ask teachers to get more clarity?

Why This MindSpark Works

💠 It avoids policing:

No rules are enforced; instead, empathy is built for both parents and teachers.

💠 It normalizes uncertainty:

It’s okay if the "School Lens" feels blurry that’s where the conversation starts.

💠 It builds a bridge:

It shows children that their values stay steady even when their setting changes.

Parent Tip

Focus on opening a bridge, not a debate.

After the activity, you can use this simple script to connect with your child’s teacher: “We’ve been discussing our family learning values at home, specifically [Value 1] and [Value 2].

How do those values show up in your classroom expectations when it comes to AI?”

Family Extra

Ask everyone at the table:

“If this were a real project that lasted a month, what role would you want on the team?”

You’ll learn a lot about how your child sees their own strengths!
