DISCOVERING AI: Igniting Human Potential

At the Beijing Humanoid Robot Half Marathon, humanoid robots ran the same 21.0975 km distance they attempted one year ago. In 2025, the fastest finished in over two hours and forty minutes. In 2026, the top performer crossed the line in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.

That is not steady progress. That is acceleration.

Real-world test

This race is not a lab experiment. It is part of the broader Beijing E-Town Half-Marathon, an A1-level event in China's athletics calendar, with more than 12,000 human runners participating. Humanoid robots compete on a dedicated parallel road course for safety.

To compete, robots are required to:

  • Maintain bipedal locomotion

  • Complete the full half-marathon distance

  • Finish within time limits comparable to human races

This creates something rare: a real-world test of robotics performance under meaningful conditions.

What changed in one year

The most important story is not the winner. It is the field.

In 2026, around 300 robots from more than 100 teams entered. Roughly 40% finished the race, a significant improvement from 2025. Multiple robots clustered near the top, finishing within minutes of each other.

The winning robot, "Lightning," developed by Honor, completed the race in 50:26. Other leading autonomous robots followed at approximately 51 minutes and 53 minutes. A remotely operated version recorded a faster raw time of 48:19. Under race rules, only fully autonomous robots are eligible to win, with time penalties applied to tele-operated entries.

A complete public leaderboard has not been released from the weekend’s race. Even without it, the pattern is clear.

2026

  • Hundreds entered

  • Nearly half finished

  • Top times under one hour

That is not iteration. That is acceleration.

This is bigger than robotics

We have already seen this pattern with AI. Rapid iteration. Compounding gains. Shortened timelines between breakthroughs. Now we are seeing it in the physical world.

Robots are not just improving how they process information. They are improving how they move, adapt, and perform in real environments.

You do not need a full leaderboard to understand the signal.

When hundreds of machines improve this quickly in one year, the world your child is growing up in is changing just as fast.

The question is not whether technology will advance.
